Das der Konvergenztheorie chemischer Cluster zugrunde liegende Prinzip basiert auf den Edelgaskonfigurationen, von denen wir wissen, dass sie sehr stabil sind. Die Skelettzahl (k) wird mit Gruppen von chemischen Elementen und insbesondere mit den Valenzelektronen der Gruppen des Periodensystems der chemischen Elemente in Verbindung gebracht. Nach der Entdeckung der Skelettzahl (k) wurde es unumgänglich, ihr eine chemische Bedeutung beizumessen. Die Skelettzahl (k) stellt einfach die ANZAHL DER ELEKTRONENPaare dar, die das jeweilige Element benötigt, um eine Edelgaskonfiguration zu erreichen. Das heißt, wenn wir einen Satz von Elektronenpaaren hinzufügen, der (k) entspricht, wird der resultierende Monoskelett-Cluster eine Edelgaskonfiguration mit einem k-Wert von Null (K=0) erreichen. Die Konvergenztheorie für die Skelettelemente lässt sich also durch eine einfache Gleichung darstellen: E(k) + k[2H] → E(H)2k[K=0]; das (k)-Symbol wird einem nackten Skelettelement zugeordnet, während das (K)-Symbol für ein Monoskelettelement mit Liganden oder einen Multiskelettelementcluster mit oder ohne Liganden reserviert ist.
