Dabei geht der Autor zurück zu den Anfängen: Schutzzoll, Industrialisierung und „amerikanische Zivilisation'. Gezielt steuert die Argumentation dann auf die amerikanische Gegenwart zu. Sie startete in den 1970er Jahren mit dem Neoliberalismus und der De-Industrialisierung. Ihre Resultate erbrachten eine konsumorientierte Moderne bei gleichzeitiger sozialer Abwertung von Schwarzen und Teilen der weißen Unterschicht.
