Während der Apartheid in Südafrika wurden riesige Mengen an Ressourcen für die Minderheiten angehäuft, wodurch die Bevölkerungsmehrheit (Afrikaner) größtenteils am Rande des Existenzminimums lebte. Unter den Afrikanern entwickelte sich jedoch eine starke wirtschaftliche Solidarität, die einige Sparvereine/rotierende Spar- und Kreditvereinigungen (ROSCA, Stokvels) ins Leben riefen und bis heute aufrechterhalten, in denen die Mitglieder wöchentlich, alle zwei Wochen oder monatlich feste Geldbeträge in einen zentralen Fonds einzahlen. Ihre Beliebtheit in Südafrika ist offenbar auf das Erbe der Apartheid zurückzuführen, in deren Rahmen in den Townships der Schwarzen fast keine legalen Geschäfte erlaubt waren. Dieses Buch zeigt, dass die Township Retail Stores (TRS) nur wenig Gewinn abwerfen, da diese Stokvels für ihre Einkäufe große Einzelhandelsgeschäfte bevorzugen und die Leiter dieser Stokvels kein Vertrauen darin haben, dass die TRS ihre Anforderungen erfüllen können.
