Die Edition macht deutlich, in welchem Ausmaß Webers großer kapitalismuskritischer Entwurf, der von ihm als eine Art „spiritualistischer' Gegenposition zur Geschichtsphilosophie des Historischen Materialismus aufgefasst worden ist, zugleich als sein persönlichstes Buch verstanden werden kann.​
