Außerdem sind Wirtschaftswissenschaftler beteiligt, deren Aufgabe es ist, die Rentabilität des Projekts sowohl im Vorfeld als auch im Nachhinein zu berechnen, d. h. die Wirtschaftswissenschaftler schätzen im Voraus den Gewinn ab, der nach der Inbetriebnahme der Ölfelder erzielt wird. Dies wird als Rentabilitätsanalyse bezeichnet. Diese wirtschaftliche Berechnung ermöglicht es, die Kommerzialität der Ölentdeckung zu beurteilen, um zu wissen, ob sie positiv oder negativ ist.
