In der Novellensammlung Die Juden von Barnow (1877), die jüdische Stetlgeschichten vereint, setzte Franzos seinem Heimatort Czortkow (dem fiktiven Barnow seiner Schriften) ein literarisches Denkmal. Diese Werke schufen die materielle Grundlage dafür, dass er sich mehr und mehr vom Tagesjournalismus abwenden und sich der Schriftstellerei im Hauptberuf widmen konnte. Karl Emil Franzos (1848-1904) war ein zu seiner Zeit sehr populärer österreichischer Schriftsteller und Publizist. Seine Erzählungen und Romane reflektieren die Welt des osteuropäischen Judentums und die Spannungen, denen er als Jude und Deutscher in Galizien und der Bukowina ausgesetzt war.
