Die berufliche Institutionenordnung der staatssozialistischen Gesellschaft wurde durch eine zunehmende Verfestigung der formalen Wertbildung und bürokratischen Herrschaftsstrukturen geprägt. An der institutionellen Entwicklung der Planwirtschaft, des sozialistischen Bildungswesens sowie der Kaderpolitik der SED wird gezeigt, wie sich die formale Normierung des Berufs immer mehr im Gegensatz zu seiner alltäglichen Praxis konstituierte. Aufgrund dieses Widerspruchs von formaler und reflexiver Wert- und Strukturbildung wird der Staatssozialismus als eine formale, durch ideologische und bürokratische Herrschaft geprägte Moderne im Gegensatz zur reflexiven, funktional differenzierten und eigendynamischen Moderne der westlichen Gesellschaften charakterisiert.
