Diese Forschungsarbeit untersucht den Ursprung des amerikanischen Traums, seine Eitelkeit und seine Folgen in drei ausgewählten amerikanischen Romanen: Upton Sinclairs The Jungle, Jack Londons The Iron Heel und John Steinbecks The Grapes of Wrath. Das erste Kapitel ist eine Einführung in die Definition des amerikanischen Traums und ein historischer Ausblick auf seinen Ursprung und seine Entwicklung mit Schwerpunkt auf seinem sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Versprechen im zwanzigsten Jahrhundert. Ein kurzer Blick auf den literarischen Werdegang der drei amerikanischen Autoren und ihrer Romane aus gesellschaftspolitischer Sicht legt den hohlen Traum und seine Grundzüge offen. Im zweiten Kapitel wird Der Dschungel unter rassischen und wirtschaftlichen Gesichtspunkten anhand der Figur des Jirgus und seiner litauischen Familie erörtert. Im dritten Kapitel wird Londons Die eiserne Ferse unter einem politischen Gesichtspunkt untersucht. Dieser Roman schildert den Kampf zwischen der Kapitalistenklasse und den Arbeitern. Im vierten Kapitel wird der amerikanische Traum aus sozialer und wirtschaftlicher Sicht anhand der Familie Joad erörtert.
