Lernende in ländlichen Gebieten sind benachteiligt, was den Umgang mit Englisch als erster zusätzlicher Sprache (EFAL) angeht. Sie benötigen mehr grundlegende Aufmerksamkeit bei den Lese- und Schreibfähigkeiten. Aus diesem Grund wird in der Studie untersucht, warum Lernende der Mittelstufe in Schulen in ländlichen Gebieten Schwierigkeiten beim Lesen und Schreiben in EFAL haben. In Anbetracht dessen argumentiert Darara (2012:4), dass Lesen und Schreiben keine Bildungshürde ist, die nur Lernende der Mittelstufe in Schulen betrifft. Der Zweck dieser Studie ist es, die Herausforderungen der Lernenden beim Lesen und Schreiben in EFAL in der Mittelstufe aufzuzeigen. Die Studie beschäftigt sich daher mit der Frage, wie die Lese- und Schreibprobleme der Lernenden in dieser Phase beseitigt werden können.
