Im Laufe des letzten Jahrhunderts hat die Materialwissenschaft rasante Fortschritte gemacht. Dies hat sich auch in unserem täglichen Leben bemerkbar gemacht. Vor allem die Kieferorthopädie hat davon stark profitiert. In diesem Zweig der Zahnmedizin wurden nicht nur die Materialien verbessert, sondern auch die Philosophien haben sich geändert. Die Kieferorthopädie hat sich seit den Tagen des E-Bogens und der verschiedenen herausnehmbaren Apparaturen, die zu Beginn des 20. Mit der Einführung der Edgewise-Apparatur mussten neuere Materialien eingeführt werden, um diese Apparaturen optimal nutzen zu können. Wir sehen also, dass die Philosophie der Zahnspange und der Fortschritt in der Materialwissenschaft eng miteinander verbunden sind. All diese Drahtlegierungen, die eingeführt wurden, und die neueren, haben einige sehr individuelle und einzigartige Eigenschaften, die mit ihnen verbunden sind. Um die neueren Drähte zu verwenden, ist es also wichtig zu wissen, warum sie sich so verhalten, d.h. welche Eigenschaften sie haben.
