’Die Engelking Briefe’ enthält Briefe von und über Ferdinand Friedrich Engelking 1810-1885. Sie erzählen eine eigene Geschichte über die Schwierigkeiten und den Überlebenskampf des Texas-Pioniers. Er schaffte es trotz der harten Bedingungen nach der Auswanderung aus Deutschland ein Leben für sich und seine Familie in der neuen Republik Texas aufzubauen. Beim Tod der Lieben und der Kinder Ferdinands werden dem Leser manchmal die Tränen kommen. Trotz all dieser Rückschläge gelingt es der kinderreichen Familie sich dank Ferdinands hartnäckigem Pioniergeist und der unermüdlichen Unterstützung seiner Frau eine Existenz aufzubauen. Aufgrund ihre Gastfreundschaft wird die Familie zum Treffpunkt für die ersten Siedler. Zusammen mit dem Lehrer Maetze, gründen sie schließlich das erste deutsche Gymnasium in Texas. 3
