Der Name der Faust-Figur kommt zweifellos aus anderer Quelle. Aber Goethe legt seinem Gretchen Worte in den Mund, die sie gesprochen hat: Susanna Margaretha Brand, genannt Susann, die er hat sterben sehen Anfang 1772 und die niemand, der ihr begegnete jemals vergessen konnte...' 1)Dass den jungen Goethe diese Hinrichtung 'so berührt hat', ist eine Legende, denn als Minister in Weimar hat er selbst ein Todesurteil über eine Kindsmörderin unterschrieben.Ob dem wirklich so war, oder ob Goethe den Fall nur aus dem Grund verwendet hat, um sein Buch zu verkaufen, ist daher fraglich. Fakt ist jedoch, dass Goethe mit seinem Faust die Problematik seiner Zeit gut aufgefasst hat, um es an den Mann zu bringen. Zu der Zeit Goethes häuften sich solche Fälle, wie der von der Susanna Margaretha Brand. Immer mehr Frauen wurden unverheiratet schwanger und sahen daher Kindsmord als den einzigen Ausweg. Doch warum ist dies so? Was waren die Auslöser und wie handhabte man solche Fälle? Die Arbeit beginnt mit einem allgemeinen Überblick über das Thema des Kindermords in der Frühen Neuzeit. Anschließend wird der Sachverhalt anhand des Beispiels der Susanna Margaretha Brand dargestellt. Besonders hilfreich bei der Erstellung der Arbeit waren die Bücher „Gretchen - Ein Frankfurter Kriminalfall' von Ruth Berger und „Das Frankfurter Gretchen' von Rebekka Habermas. 1) Berger, Gretchen, S. 7
