Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die symbolische Bedeutung der Kostüme der Congada da Lapa von 2004, einem Fest, das auf das 19. Jahrhundert zurückgeht, darzustellen und dabei die Veränderungen und Kontinuitäten, die sich bei der Aufführung ergeben haben, hervorzuheben. Für die Studie wurden verschiedene Quellen ausgewertet, darunter Zeitungs- und Zeitschriftenartikel, das Folklorebuch Congadas Paranaenses von José Loureiro Fernandes, die Zeitschrift des Diözesanheiligtums von São Benedito, das Engagement der Bruderschaft von São Benedito, der Brief mit der Bitte um Unterstützung für die Congada-Gruppe und eine DVD mit einer Dokumentation über die Wiederbelebung der Congada da Lapa. Diese große Vielfalt an Quellen ermöglichte eine umfassendere Bewertung der verschiedenen Elemente, aus denen sich das Fest zusammensetzt. Die Arbeit umfasst Diskussionen über Kultur, Feste, Folklore, Erbe und Erinnerung sowie über den portugiesischen Einfluss in Afrika und die Entstehung religiöser Bruderschaften in Brasilien, insbesondere unter den Gefangenen; sie befasst sich auch mit den historischen Aspekten der Stadt Lapa, dem Leben von São Benedito und der Congada; schließlich untersucht sie die symbolischen Bedeutungen der Kleidung der Congos.
