Außerdem wird auf verschiedene Catena eingegangen. Bodenbildung ist die physikalisch, chemisch und eventuell auch biologisch bedingte Veränderung des Ausgangsmaterials durch die Einwirkung und Wechselwirkung von sieben Faktoren: Klima, Gestein, Landform, Vegetation, Bodentierwelt, Einwirkung des Menschen und die Zeitdauer.Es besteht also ein enger Zusammenhang zwischen der Entwicklung der Böden und den geomorphologischen Prozessresponssystemen. Insbesondere bewirken die genannten Faktoren die Differenzierung des Ausgangsmaterials in sogenannte Bodenhorizonte (AHNERT, 1996: 112).
