Der äußere Anlaß zur Abfassung der vorliegenden Studie war durch eine Preisausschreibung der k. k. Gesellschaft der Ärzte in Wien (Dr. Moriz Goldberger-Preis) gegeben. Das Thema lautete: 'Die biologischen Grundlagen der sekundären Geschlech ts­ charaktere'. Zur Bewerbung um diesen Preis haben wir unsere seit Jahren fortgeführten Untersuchungen über diese Frage zusammengefaßt und das Manuskript im Mai 1912 eingereicht. Ein ad hoc zusammenge­ setztes Komitee (bestehend aus den Herren Exner, v. Frisch, Paltauf, Schauta) hat unsere Arbeit als preiswürdig befunden. Bei unseren Untersuchungen haben wir vielfache Förderung von Seiten der Herren v. EiseIs berg, Franz, Hochenegg, Holz.­ knecht, Kolisko, Paltauf erfahren, für welche wir a:uch an dieser Stelle wärmstens danken. Herr Dr. H u g 0 K a nt 0 r, welcher unsere Versuchstiere jahre­ lang unter inöglichst natürlichen Bedingungen beherbergte und uns in ihrer Beobachtung unterstützte, nehme gleichfalls unseren herz­ lichsten Dank entgegen.
