In dieser Arbeit wurde die Qualität der Abwässer einer Papierrecyclinganlage und deren Auswirkungen auf die physikalisch-chemische Qualität des aufnehmenden Imo-Flusssystems untersucht. Nach dem Einleiten der Abwässer veränderte sich die gesamte Wasserqualität des Flusses. Es zeigte sich, dass der Fluss ein gutes Potenzial zur Erholung von der Einleitung der Abwässer aus der Papierfabrik aufweist, da die Abwässer die Selbstreinigungskraft des Flusswassers nicht überfordert haben. Zudem zeigt ein Vergleich der Abwasserqualität mit den Richtlinien der Federal Environmental Protection Agency (FEPA) (1990) für die maximal zulässigen Konzentrationen bei der Einleitung von Abwasser der Zellstoff- und Papierindustrie in Binnengewässer, dass die Abwasserqualität innerhalb der Grenzwerte liegt. Allerdings waren alle Parameter in den Sedimenten höher als in den Wasserproben. Dies ist eine bekannte Tatsache, da Sedimente in einem Flusssystem als Senke und Speicher für Schwermetalle fungieren.
