Die Bodenversiegelung in großen städtischen Zentren und ihre Auswirkungen auf die Umwelt und die Gesellschaft sind in den Städten zunehmend präsent. Ziel dieser Studie ist es, den Prozess der Bodenversiegelung in Feira de Santana aufgrund der städtischen Expansion zu analysieren. Diese Gemeinde in Bahia ist die zweitgrößte Stadt des Bundesstaates, die vor kurzem in den Rang einer regionalen Metropole erhoben wurde und eine relativ flache Topographie aufweist. Im Laufe der Jahre fehlte es in diesem Gebiet an Studien zur Stadtplanung, zur Förderung der Umwelterziehung und zur Umsetzung der Stadtsanierung. Mit Hilfe von Satellitenbildern des Stadtgebiets und Vektoren wurden die Stadtteile abgegrenzt und so eine Stadtgrenze geschaffen. Auf dieser Grundlage wurden in dieser Studie Georeferenzierung, Segmentierung und Klassifizierung der Bilder sowie eine statistische Analyse der Daten durch räumliche Analyse durchgeführt. Modellierung und Bildverarbeitung wurden mit der GIS-Software SPRING durchgeführt.
