Les diapirs de sel tertiaire forment des sommets topographiques dans le bassin du Grand Kavir et dans plusieurs de ses sous-bassins tels que Qom et Garmsar (Iran central). Le sel tertiaire dissous à partir de ces sommets topographiques s’accumule sous forme de saumure dans les dépressions topographiques en aval, où il est souvent reprécipité sous forme de sel moderne. Le bassin de Garmsar fait partie d’une série de bassins situés dans l’avant-pays des monts Alborz et formant une échancrure dans la périphérie nord du Grand Kavir, dont il est séparé par le Kuh-e-Gachab et la houle Dulasian.
