Au cours des dernières années, l’utilisation de la microscopie dans la détermination des infections par les trypanosomes bovins a fourni des informations importantes sur l’épidémiologie de la maladie. Cependant, des techniques moléculaires récentes, telles que l’amplification isotherme en boucle (LAMP), ont été mises au point. La technique LAMP cible spécifiquement le gène de l’ARNr 18S de Trypanosoma congolense, le gène de l’élément mobile d’insertion répétitive (RIME) du sous-genre Trypanozoon et le gène associé à la résistance au sérum humain (SRA) de Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense. La technique LAMP est très sensible et spécifique, tout en étant facile à utiliser. Ce test pourrait à l’avenir s’avérer utile pour la détection précise de routine de la trypanosomiase dans des échantillons de terrain dans des pays aux ressources limitées tels que la Zambie.
