Los ensayos de este libro van detrás de las palabras en estos dos sentidos: las siguen, las persiguen y escudriñan su tramoya. Pero no lo hacen desde fuera. Reflexionan sobre algunos aspectos de la lengua desde el punto de vista de alguien que se dedica a ella por oficio; esto es, desde la perspectiva del traductor y la del lexicógrafo, aunque también la del poeta. No tienen la intención de exponer una teoría sino la de expresar algunas de las ideas que se le ocurren a un oficial mientras practica su oficio. Son pues testimonio de una experiencia y se atienen a aquello decía T.S. Eliot que debía ser la crítica de poesía: un esclarecimiento de ciertas técnicas del oficio. 10
