Ainsi, écrit-il, au contraire de ceux qui se disent anarchistes, je ne demande pas d’emblée point de gouvernement , mais d’emblée un meilleur gouvernement. Pourtant, la pensée de Thoreau est très souvent citée comme relevant de l’anarchie, et nombreux sont ceux, comme Gandhi ou Martin Luther King qui se prévalurent à sa suite des aspects libertaires de son oeuvre. Il faut dire en effet, et c’est précisément sur ce point que cette édition attire l’attention du lecteur, qu’il existe nombre de points communs entre la pensée de Thoreau et celle de Malatesta, figure intellectuelle du mouvement libertaire et théoricien de l’anarchie politique. Nous y retrouvons par exemple le rejet de la dictature de la majorité, le devoir de résister aux lois injustes ou encore la dénonciation des violences exercée par l’Etat. Henry David Thoreau était-il de ce fait un anarchiste ? La lecture de ces deux textes fournira sans nul doute des éléments de réponse.
