Desobediencia civil es un ensayo que se dictó como conferencia en 1848 con el nombre Los derechos y obligaciones del individuo con el Gobierno. Este bosquejaba el pensamiento de Thoreau respecto a la relación que debería tener el individuo con el Estado. Este vínculo no era, por supuesto, ni la sumisión ni la obediciencia a ciegas. Era, más bien, una propuesta de autonomía donde el criterio moral jugaba un rol crucial, ya que al ser ejercido permitía cuestionar al Estado si sus leyes o decisiones eran evaluadas como injustas y, por consiguiente, tomar medidas contra ellas. No pretendía la abolición del Estado -aunque juzgaba ideal la ausencia de este, lo consideraba como un sueño utópico- sino que el ciudadano se permitiera rebelarse contra él cuando lo juzgara necesario. 10
