Der Begriff der Subjektivität prägt die moderne philosophische Reflexion in hohem Maße. Unter den Fähigkeiten oder Operationen, die das Subjekt ausmachen, scheint der Wille als bestimmender Faktor für die Handlungen der Menschen und für das Wissen, das sie daraus ableiten, zentral zu sein. Die Philosophie von David Hume (1711-1776) bietet uns somit eine reflexive Quelle für das Verständnis der menschlichen Natur, d. h. für die Analyse des „Ich', des Bewusstseins oder des Geistes. Die vorliegende Arbeit zielt darauf ab, eine solche Analyse zu entwickeln, indem sie den Begriff des Willens als grundlegende Instanz aufzeigt, durch die sich das Selbst durch seine Handlungen versteht. Es versteht sich also nicht nur, indem es sich selbst die Abfolge seiner Affekte und Gedanken beschreibt, sondern auch, indem es sich selbst in diesem unaufhörlichen geistigen Fluss interpretiert oder bezeichnet.
