Eine zentrale Herausforderung für künftige Bemühungen zur Eindämmung des Klimawandels wird darin bestehen, sicherzustellen, dass die Industrieländer den Übergang von einem fossillastigen Energiesystem zu einem nachhaltigeren System schaffen, in dem erneuerbare Energiequellen vorherrschen. Allerdings ist der Grad der Verbreitung erneuerbarer Energien in den Industrieländern sehr unterschiedlich. Anhand einer vergleichenden Fallstudie des Elektrizitätssektors der indischen Bundesstaaten Maharashtra und Tamil Nadu werden die aus zwei unterschiedlichen theoretischen Perspektiven abgeleiteten Thesen zum gesellschaftlichen Wandel überprüft und Zusammenhänge zwischen den vorgeschlagenen Erklärungsmechanismen und dem Grad der Verbreitung erneuerbarer Energien in den beiden Bundesstaaten hergestellt.
