Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2004 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Literatur, Note: 2, Universität Hamburg (Anglistik und Amerikanistik), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die puritanischen Glaubensvorstellungen spielen in Werken von Defoe eine große Rolle. Somit liegt es nahe seine Werke im Lichte dieser Vorstellungen zu betrachten. Was sagt aber nun die puritanische Lehre? Kurz gefasst, dass der Mensch von je her auserwählt ist, oder nicht, und er an diesem Zustand nichts ändern kann. Alles was ihm bleibt ist herauszufinden wie es um seine Erwähltheit bestellt ist. Dabei spielen Zufälle eine große Rolle, den sie gelten, zumindest indirekt, als Zeichen Gottes, und sagen somit etwas über den Status eines Menschen aus. Gerade in einer Extremsituation wie sie der Ausbruch der Pest in London darstellt, in dessen Mitte sich die zentrale Figur in Defoe’s „A yournal of a plague year' befindet, bietet viele Situationen um nach Zeichen der Erwähltheit dieser Person zu suchen.
