Heutzutage werden 74% der weltweiten Energieproduktion aus fossilen Brennstoffen (Öl, Kohle und Gas), 20% aus erneuerbaren Energien (Wasserkraft, Biomasse, Solar- und Windkraft) und 6% aus Kernenergie gewonnen. Zahlreiche Studien zur Verknappung der fossilen Ressourcen laufen auf das folgende Ergebnis hinaus: Die Menge an verfügbarer fossiler Energie wird im Zeitraum 2010-2020 abnehmen und bis zum Ende dieses Jahrhunderts aufgebraucht sein. Unsere Energiezukunft muss auf Kernenergie und erneuerbaren Energien basieren.Die derzeitige Kernenergieproduktion zeigt eine sehr hohe Leistungsdichte und Umweltvorteile in Bezug auf den CO2-Ausstoß. Allerdings hat diese Energie viele Nachteile: die schwierige Wiederaufbereitung von Abfällen und Gebäuden, ihre Auswirkungen auf die Umwelt, Sicherheitsprobleme und die Tatsache, dass ihr Brennstoff nicht erneuerbar ist (geschätzte Erschöpfung bis zum Ende des Jahrhunderts für Uran 235). Obwohl es schwer vorstellbar ist, diese Energielösung abzuschaffen, ist es besser, sie auf das niedrigste Maß an Notwendigkeit zu beschränken.
