Während die politischen Regime Lateinamerikas im 20. Jh. brüchig und instabil waren, nutzte der mexikanische PRI das Erbe der europäischen Kolonialherren und der Mexikanischen Revolution, um ein politisches System von erstaunlicher Dauerhaftigkeit und überraschender Stabilität zu etablieren. Schlüsselfaktor dieses Projektes war die Instrumentalisierung der existieren Klientelnetzwerke und die Schaffung neuer. Dies ermöglichte es dem PRI, mit einem hohen Maß an Kontrolle zu regieren, ohne dabei die Miteinbeziehung der Massen zu vergessen. Produkt dieser Strategie war eine 'partizipative Diktatur'. Der vorliegende Artikel analysiert die Methoden und Mechanismen, die der PRI zur Implementierung eines derart effizient arbeitenden Systems einsetzte und die Gründe für den Zusammenbruch der PRI-Diktatur Ende des letzten Jahrhunderts. While the political regimes in Latin America were shaped by rupture and instability in the 20th century, the Mexican PRI managed to benefit from the heritage of the European colonists and the Mexican Revolution in order to establish a political system of an astonishing durability and surprising stability. The key factor of this project was the instrumentalization of existent clientelist networks and the creation of new ones, which both allowed the Revolutionary Party to rule with a high level of control without neglecting the inclusion of the masses. The product of this policy was a 'participative dictatorship'.
