Inhaltsangabe:Zusammenfassung: Das T1 zugrunde liegende Übersetzungssystem METAL wird in seiner Entwicklung und Funktionsweise beschrieben. T1 wird daraufhin aus Nutzersicht untersucht. Dazu werden charakteristische Defizite, die bei der Übersetzung verschiedener linguistischer Phänomene vom Englischen ins Deutsche auftreten, aufgezeigt. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird ein kohärenter englischer Text aus dem Übersetzungsalltag (Gebrauchsanweisung) mit T1 ins Deutsche übertragen. Die 71 übersetzten Sätze werden nacheinander diskutiert. Daraus ergibt sich, dass die richtige lexikalische Zuordnung der Verben und das korrekte Ausfüllen der Valenzrahmen der Verben der Zielsprache das Übersetzungsergebnis stark beeinflussen. Weiterhin könnte T1 dadurch optimiert werden, dass die unterschiedlichen grammatischen Konstruktionen besser erkannt und Mustern zugeordnet werden. Außerdem besteht Kodierungsbedarf bei zahlreichen Wörterbucheinträgen für einzelne Lexeme.
