Der Islam und die traditionelle Dagbon-Kultur haben seit den Anfängen der Religion bei den Dagbamba eine liebenswerte Beziehung aufgebaut. Diese Beziehung ist in vielen Bereichen des Lebens zu beobachten. Vor allem aber in den traditionellen politischen Institutionen und Strukturen des Staates, so dass die Dagbon als islamisierter Staat bezeichnet wurden. Seit der Zeit des 16. Königs von Dagbon, Na Zangina, weisen die traditionellen Strukturen und Einrichtungen von Dagbon starke Elemente des Islam auf. Fast alle Herrscher des Staates aus dieser Zeit tragen muslimische Namen, auch wenn die meisten von ihnen nicht als Muslime bezeichnet werden können, da sie für die Verehrung traditioneller Gottheiten und Ahnen des Landes bekannt sind.
