Meyer lebt bis zu seiner späten Hochzeit - 1875 im Alter von 50 Jahren - mit seiner Schwester Betsy zusammen, die ihm Beraterin und Sekretärin ist. Er schwankt zwischen der deutschen und der französischen Sprache, übersetzt umfangreich in beide Richtungen und schreibt schließlich auf Deutsch einen Roman und zehn Novellen, die zu den wichtigsten Texten aus der Schweiz des 19. Jahrhunderts zählen. 1898 stirbt Conrad Ferdinand Meyer in Kilchberg bei Zürich nach langer Krankheit in schwerer Depression. 3
