Der ganze Plot ist eine Farce, bei dem nach anfänglich geschäftigem Treiben keiner bekommt was er will. Das Bombenattentat schlägt fehl, Apollon Apollonowitsch Ableuchov wird nicht Minister, Nikolaj Ableuchovs Liebe zu Sofia Petrowna bleibt unerfüllt, Dudkin wird um seine Ideale betrogen und Lippantschenko gar ermordet. Bezeichnenderweise endet die Ableuchovsche Verfolgungsjagd innerhalb des minimalistischen Showdowns auf dem Klo.Im Folgenden soll nun versucht werden, die ironischen Mittel zu beschreiben, die Belyj in den verschiedenen Konstruktionsebenen seines Romans „Petersburg' einsetzt. Die Methode ist dabei, von den großen Bausteinen des Romans, wie der Erzählhaltung, auf die kleinen Bausteine, wie die ironischen Details, überzugehen.
