Der arme Heinrich, a verse narrative by Gerhart Hauptmann, retells the medieval tale of a knight afflicted with leprosy. Heinrich, once a prosperous and respected figure, is struck by a terrible disease. He learns that he can only be cured by the heart’s blood of a pure virgin who willingly sacrifices herself for him. The play explores themes of suffering, sacrifice, and redemption. When a young peasant girl, Agnes, offers to give her life for him, Heinrich is faced with a profound moral dilemma. He grapples with the value of his own life versus the life of another, and the true meaning of love and sacrifice. Hauptmann’s work is celebrated for its poignant exploration of human nature and its enduring relevance to questions of morality and existence. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
