Ludvig Holberg (1684 - 1754) var forfatter og en av de helt sentrale personene i det litterære miljøet i Danmark-Norge i første halvdel av 1700-tallet. Han er i dag særlig kjent for sine komedier, som ofte preges av bitende satire, men var også viktig som historiograf og moralfilosofisk essayist.Denne boken er en nyutgivelse av Ludvig Holbergs verk Den Berømmelige Norske Handel-Stad Bergens Beskrivelse utgitt i 1737. Holberg hadde skaffet seg et manuskript av historikeren Edvard Edvardsen med et vell av informasjon om Bergens historie. Holberg hentet ut det viktigste, og la til opplevelser fra egen oppvekst. Holberg gir i denne boken en utmerket karakteristikk av forskjellige bergenske forhold på denne tiden. Denne utgivelsen følger førsteutgaven fra 1737 med 1700-tallets danske skriftspråk. For å gjøre teksten lettere tilgjengelig er bokens originale gotiske skrift konvertert til dagens norske skriftstil.
