Demetrio e Polibio is an early opera in two acts by Gioachino Rossini to an Italian libretto by Vincenzio Viganò. The opera, a dramma serio per musica, recounts a tale of mistaken identity, familial loyalty, and ultimate reconciliation set in ancient Parthia. The work showcases Rossini’s emerging talent for vocal writing and dramatic pacing, with arias and ensembles that highlight the emotional intensity of the characters and the unfolding drama. While not as widely performed as some of Rossini’s later comic operas, Demetrio e Polibio offers valuable insights into the composer’s development and the conventions of early 19th-century Italian opera. This edition preserves the original Italian libretto, allowing audiences and scholars to engage with the work in its original form. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.        “Some shows have warnings for strobe lights. Some have them for loud gunshots.  Some for smoke.   MISSISSIPPI GODDAMN, a new play by Jonathan Norton should have one for intensity.   Granted, anyone attending a play about civil rights pioneer Medgar Evers set in 1963 Jackson, Mississippi, should expect some strife. Blood in the battle for racial equality is no surprise, but f...

The most astonishing thing is the sureness with which everything is controlled, explained, justified, in the most extravagant buffoonery. The cross-purpose...

This sinfonia (or overture) was the last thing composed for the Rossini’s opera La Gazza ladra (known in English as The Thieving Magpie).
