Il colonnello Mark Ronald Burryon, ingegnere elettronico, docente dell’Accademia Aeronautica USAF, muore in seguito a una ferita d’arma da fuoco nel salotto della sua villa alla periferia di Boston. L’arma viene trovata vicino al corpo con il caricatore parzialmente fuoruscito dal vano di alloggiamento. Sono le 7,30 di domenica 26 aprile 1992. All’inizio tutto concorre a delineare una sbrigativa e assurda conclusione da parte delle autorità: suicidio. Questa tesi è stranamente sostenuta anche dal comandante dell’Accademia Aeronautica dove, da circa un mese, il colonnello era in attesa di un imminente e inspiegabile trasferimento di sapore punitivo, deciso senza apparente ragione. Sua moglie, Mary Grace Gospeller, non crede a tale interpretazione dei fatti, che considera preconfezionata: indagando per stabilire la verità scopre un intrigo che affonda le radici nella Seconda Guerra Mondiale.
