Il colonialismo europeo ha avuto un forte impatto sulle società africane e i suoi effetti si fanno sentire ancora oggi. Nonostante le lotte per l’indipendenza nel secondo dopoguerra, il peso del dominio coloniale è ancora presente, soprattutto nel campo della cultura. La 'decolonizzazione delle menti' è stata una sfida raccolta da molti intellettuali di origine africana. Il cinema è diventato uno strumento importante in questo processo, con la prima proposta di un cinema africano nell’ex Africa occidentale francese durante gli anni ’60. Questo lavoro analizza la produzione cinematografica del senegalese Ousmane Sembène durante quel periodo. La sua proposta cinematografica e il suo attivismo hanno influenzato molti artisti e intellettuali africani, la sua ricerca di un’estetica che rifiutasse gli standard europei e hollywoodiani è considerata da molti la fondazione di quello che è stato chiamato Cinema Africano. Il presente lavoro ha lo scopo di contribuire all’analisi degli elementi che compongono questa proposta estetica e al dibattito sulla possibilità di un Cinema Africano.
