Les différentes voies d’administration des médicaments sont considérées comme novatrices, telles que les voies nasale, buccale, rectale, oculaire, pulmonaire et vaginale. Elles ont été étudiées au cours des 20 dernières années comme substitut aux voies orale et parentérale. La voie parentérale nécessite des injections fréquentes ainsi que des connaissances techniques, ce qui limite son utilisation. En ce qui concerne la voie orale, son principal avantage est de contourner le métabolisme de premier passage hépatique et les dégradations chimiques et enzymatiques qui se produisent généralement dans l’estomac. Le système d’administration de médicaments par voie muqueuse présente donc un avantage par rapport à cette voie.
