Martha is a London prostitute who is asked to visit a condemned prisoner to satisfy his last wish. her performance leads to her being nominated sole heiress to the prisoner’s fortune. This angers the Church that attempts to stop the proliferation of this new trend. but in the process, a prelate gets hooked on gambling and is later murdered, while the Bishop gets hooked on Martha, who has set up a house of gambling and prostitution. The house is raided by police and in consequence, closed. Martha stsrts a serious relationship with a man which leads her to refuse the Bishop. Finally, she emigrates to Americe.
