Autrefois considérée comme un simple dépôt de bactéries et de débris alimentaires, la plaque dentaire est aujourd’hui considérée comme un biofilm vivant et sophistiqué. Les premières théories se sont concentrées sur la quantité de plaque, puis sur le rôle de certaines espèces pathogènes. La recherche moderne révèle que la plaque dentaire est une communauté microbienne hautement organisée, attachée à la surface et intégrée dans une matrice autoproduite. Ce biofilm se développe par étapes, grâce à une communication et une coopération microbiennes complexes. Dans son état équilibré, le biofilm coexiste avec l’hôte. Lorsqu’il est perturbé, il devient dysbiotique, déclenchant une maladie parodontale locale et contribuant à des conditions systémiques telles que les maladies cardiovasculaires, le diabète et les issues défavorables de la grossesse. Le passage de la 'plaque' au 'biofilm' reflète un changement de paradigme dans la compréhension de la santé bucco-dentaire et de son lien avec le bien-être général.
