El 1 de enero de 1829 zarpó del puerto de Valparaíso el buque L’Adour con destino a Francia transportando un cajón dirigido a científicos del Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle de París, el cual contenía varios paquetes de plantas americanas recolectadas y disecadas por el naturalista francés Claudio Gay. Con este envío, Gay daba inicio a su aventura en tierras chilenas, buscando forjar su carrera como naturalista y conseguir reconocimiento entre la comunidad científica europea. Este libro invita a recorrer Chile junto a Claudio Gay, reconstruyendo el itinerario de cientos de plantas, especímenes animales y muestras minerales desde su lugar de recolección hasta su disposición en el Gabinete de Historia Natural de Santiago entre 1830 y 1842, primer museo público organizado en el Chile republicano. Otros miles de objetos naturales fueron preparados, almacenados y trasladados a Europa para ser estudiados por otros naturalistas y pasar a resguardo en colecciones de prestigiosas entidades científicas dedicadas al conocimiento natural. Se trata de una aproximación al surgimiento y caracterización de las prácticas de coleccionismo científico a partir de la figura de Claudio Gay que permite comprender mejor la generación de conocimientos sobre la naturaleza del país, con especial atención al rol que jugó la formación de colecciones naturales en el quehacer naturalista desarrollado en Chile a comienzos del siglo XIX.
