Parmi les philosophes allemands, la tradition française de philosophie de l’éducation a le plus souvent et bien a tort privilégié les grandes figures de Kant et de Fichte qui relèvent bien entendu tous deux d’une pensée typique du 18-ème siècle. Contre ce courant, notre propos tente de remettre au devant de la scène moderne des idées des philosophes allemands individualistes tels que Humboldt, Herbart, Stirner et Nietzsche. Ceux ci ont réellement et profondément engagé la pensée éducative individualiste sur de nouvelles voies et problèmes, précisément en la constituant en fonction de l’expérience allemande de scolarisation, le phénomène majeur du 19eme siècle, avec la constitution de l ’Université allemande et les définitions premières du Gymnase.
