En la primera mitad del siglo XIX, dos bribonzuelos de la picaresca madrileña, Isidro Expósito y José ’El Estudiante’, apresados por sus tropelías, reciben la oferta de redimir sus faltas si se alistan voluntarios en el Ejército. En la Primera Guerra Carlista participan en la batalla que, durante la expedición real del Pretendiente, tiene lugar en Huesca (mayo de 1837). Uno de ellos, gravemente herido y auxiliado por su compañero, encuentra refugio en una casa del Barrio de la Catedral, siendo considerado por el ejército como desaparecido en combate, en realidad desertor.A partir de allí, el autor describirá los avatares de la historia patria tanto en la península como en tierras lejanas, donde muchos jóvenes, entre ellos los protagonistas de esta historia, fueron llevados por las mutables situaciones sociales, políticas y castrenses.El autor, apoyándose en unos personajes ficticios, hace un repaso de la historia militar del siglo XIX, desde el reinado de Isabel II hasta la llegada de Alfonso XII, después de la Primera República.
