'I may never be someone’s First thought Other than my own, But that’s fine. Because At least I have myself And the little figures whom remind me Daily That I . . . Am alive.'*Excerpt from 'Scaling'Daybreak by Amy Davis is a poetry collection based on her personal experiences regarding mental well-being. Growing up, the author moved every few years (her father’s job forced their family all across the American South). Because of this, Amy had to learn how to cope with constantly losing the relationships she worked so hard to build. Her vise became reading and writing, but Amy’s stories didn’t have the depth she so yearned to express. That was . . . until she began incorporating topics close to her heart. Anxiety, depression, stress, insecurity, self-satisfaction, adoration (or, rather, the lack thereof) . . . Overall, the author began to portray an array of many themes in the most beautiful prose/poetry by using their heft and gumption to her advantage. Amy has been collecting these poems for quite some time now, and-finally-she feels like the world is ready for their debut.Within Daybreak, there’s a strong sense of growth and beauty. There’s also contrast, ups and downs, back and forth . . . whiplash; but, ultimately, self-discovery and hope. The author prays that these poems might encourage others, might show them that their hardships aren’t too difficult to overcome. While the battle to keep balance within our souls may remain constant, by no means should we succumb to the darkness. Why fall into the abyss when the sun exists to guide us home?To whomever needs to hear this:You are beautiful. You are brave for facing life’s every calamity. You are perfect just as you are. You are growing into your own. There’s a destiny in your future. You’ll make it through this . . . but above all else-I’m proud of you. Welcome home. I’m glad you were able to make it.
