In Liebesgedichten tauchen auch solche Fragen auf, die die Liebe in ihrer Abhängigkeit von der Zeit oder ihre Fähigkeit, die Zeit zu beeinflussen, thematisieren.Im Folgenden soll geklärt werden, in welchem Verhältnis in Andrew Marvells Gedicht To His Coy Mistress Liebe und Zeit zueinander stehen. Zuerst muss allerdings ein Überblick darüber gegeben werden, welche Liebeskonzepte in den vorangegangen Epochen die englische Lyrik geprägt haben, um in einem zweiten Schritt zu untersuchen, wie der Sprecher in Marvells Gedicht mit diesen Konventionen verfährt.
