Die Wissenschaftstheorie versucht, die Grundlagen unseres Wis­ sens zu erforschen und den methodischen Gang wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnis zu rekonstruieren. Traditionell wird das Fundament der empirischen Wissensenschaften in der sinnlichen Erfahrung gesehen, weshalb sich die Wissenschaftstheorie bisher bevorzugt am Empiris­ mus orientiert hat. Allein, daB all unsere Erkenntnis mit der Erfah­ rung anfangt heiBt noch nicht, daB sie stets auf Erfahrung zurtick­ ftihrbar ist. Aus dies em Grund muBte in der Wissenschaftstheorie jene kopernikanische Wende erst noch vollzogen werden, die in der Erkenntnistheorie von Kant eingeleitet wurde. Man begann einzuse­ hen, daB unsere Erfahrung in starkem MaBe von Hypothesen und Theorien geleitet und geformt wird. 1m Brennpunkt der Auseinander­ setzung urn das Verhaltnis von Theorie und Erfahrung steht das Pro­ blem der theoretischen Terme, bei dem es urn die Frage geht, ob und inwieweit man zwischen einem empirischen und einem theoriegelei­ teten Anteil unserer Erkenntnis unterscheiden kann. Will man sich diesem Problem nahern, so muB man sich zunachst mit den Losungs­ ansatzen auseinandersetzen, die in der Wissenschaftstheorie bisher angeboten und diskutiert wurden. Dabei stoBt man unweigerlich auf die von Sneed und StegmUller begrUndete strukturalistische Wissen­ schaftstheorie, die in den letzten Jahrzehnten die wissenschaftstheo­ retische Diskussion in Deutschland maBgeblich beeinfluBt hat und die den Anspruch erhebt, eine Antwort auf jene wichtigen Grundla­ genprobleme geben zu konnen. Je mehr ich mich allerdings mit der strukturalistischen Wissenschaftstheorie beschaftigte, desto mehr wuchsen in mir die Zweifel, ob sie eine Losung dieser Probleme zu leisten vermag.
