Hierzu werden neben den Anschaffungskosten auch die Kosten der Nutzung, die als indirekte Kosten bezeichnet werden, berücksichtigt. „Der TCO-Ansatz ist ein von der Unternehmensberatung Gartner Group entwickeltes Konzept zur Ermittlung der tatsächlich aus einer IT-Investition resultierenden Belastungen.' Es wird bevorzugt im Rahmen des IT-Controllings bzw. der IT-Nutzenbewertung eingesetzt. 1987 stellte die Gartner Group mittels einer TCO-Analyse fest, dass in der Unternehmenspraxis im Allgemeinen nur der finanzielle Anschaffungsaufwand kostenrechnerisch berücksichtigt wird, da die im laufenden Betrieb anfallenden Kosten zu intransparent sind.
