Hier, im Bereich der Sexualität, wird er der Trägheit, dieser herkulischen Kraft, die ihn nach unten zieht, zum Pathos, zur Leidenschaft, nicht gewachsen sein. Sex ist der Fokus des Willens. In seiner körperlichen Objektivierung ist er das Gegenteil des Gehirns, das der Fokus des Wissens ist. Für Schopenhauer stört Sex fatalerweise die reine Kontemplation, und das Wissen lehnt Sex ab und befiehlt: „Wenn dein Auge dich schockiert, reiß es aus.' Auf keine andere Weise, so Schopenhauer, könnten wir uns von der Aufgabe, ja sogar vom Drehbuch, das uns der Geschlechtszyklus der Natur auferlegt hat, retten. Kein Objekt des Willens kann uns endgültige Befriedigung verschaffen, nicht einmal der Körper des anderen Geschlechts. Das befriedigte Verlangen gleicht dem Almosen, das man einem Bettler zuwirft und das nur dazu dient, sein Elend bis zum nächsten Tag zu verlängern.
