Aber Hale entpuppt sich als Drogistenmagier, der unbedingt die Gesellschaft über Magie aufklären will. Ihre Enttäuschung darüber, Chronos nicht aufspüren zu können, ist bald vergessen, als Matt des Mordes an Hale verdächtigt wird. Der ermittelnde Inspektor steht unter dem Einfluss von Matts Erzfeind Sheriff Payne, und India und Matt wird klar, dass sie den wahren Mörder finden müssen, wenn sie nicht Matts Freiheit und letztlich sein Leben riskieren wollen. Die Zeit läuft ab, während sie einen Mörder jagen, der Arzneimittel mit einem Zauber in Gifte verwandeln kann, und nebenbei die Suche nach Chronos fortsetzen. Eine Suche, die zum Erfolg führen muss, bevor Matts kaputte Taschenuhr ganz stehenbleibt.
