Appuyé sur l’œuvre des trois auteurs saisis dans leur contemporanéité : Darwin (1809-1882), Lautréamont (1846-1870), Nietzsche (1844-1900), cet essai prend une dimension scientifique, littéraire et philosophique. Le point de départ est la théorie de Darwin, dite de l’évolution, tirée de L’Origine des espèces. Ce livre provoque une déflagration dès sa publication en 1859 et soulève de nombreux débats dans les domaines de la science et de la religion. Relier cette œuvre scientifique à d’autres champs, comme la poésie de Lautréamont et la philosophie de Nietzsche, est une démarche plus rare et originale. Le sous-titre (l’extinction de la lumière divine) déclare la thèse inscrite dans les œuvres examinées : elle trouve sa conclusion dans le Dieu est mort de Nietzsche. Mais cette thèse n’est toujours pas forcément admise aujourd’hui, plus d’un siècle et demi après. Une grande partie des humains, plongée dans l’obscurantisme religieux, continue en effet d’adresser ses prières à un fantôme au nom duquel certains fanatiques, aveuglés par leur foi, vont même jusqu’à tuer malgré, en marge de cette terreur insensée, les lentes avancées de la science vers la connaissance, le recours patient à la philosophie et au doute et, toujours, l’exigeante traversée de rêves poétiques vers l’invisible, entre les cris blasphématoires et le silence.
