'Now comes the time of Midwinter’s Hag,when holy sun hides her face, night ruleslongest, and stars cut the open sky.' The world is magic, and the world is poetry. The poem-spells contained herein draw on myths, fairy tales, and folktales from around the world, from ancient Greece to the highlands of Scotland, from indigenous Mexico to the battlefields of Central Europe, from the temples of India to the banks of the Nile, from the primeval forests of Russia to the halls of a haunted library. These fifty-three poem-spells evoke a world of sleeping princesses, angry Goddesses, ice-bound forests, and cursed dancers. They evoke a world of myth, magic, and madness. [Content Warning: references to animal abuse, child abuse, domestic abuse, ecological destruction, murder, religious persecution, stalking, war, and more. These poems, after all, are based on myths and fairy tales.]

The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...
